Women’s wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) have seen tremendous growth in Iowa City over the past few years. With an estimated 65,000 girls participating in high school wrestling during the 2023-2024 season, the sport has exploded in popularity. The University of Iowa’s women’s wrestling program has been a dominant force since its inception in 2021, winning back-to-back national championships. Meanwhile, BJJ has gained traction, particularly with the introduction of a women-only program at Citadel Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2024. These developments have created exciting opportunities for female athletes in Iowa City.

High School Growth

High school girls’ wrestling has seen a dramatic rise in participation, reflecting national trends in expanding women’s combat sports. In their latest championship win, the Hawkeyes dominated the 2025 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Tournament, finishing with:

  • 201.5 total team points
  • Three individual champions
  • 15 All-Americans

  • Kennedy Blades (160 lbs): Won her title with a flawless 25-0 season, securing victory via a dominant first-period tech fall (10-0).
  • Macey Kilty (145 lbs): Finished an undefeated 28-0 season.
  • Kylie Welker (180 lbs): Became the program’s first back-to-back national champion.

Citadel Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Women’s Program

In early 2024, Citadel Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Iowa City launched a dedicated women-only program to meet growing demand.

Program details:

  • Led by Coach Claire Leighton – A blue belt American Nationals champion who has competed across the country.
  • Class schedule – Held every Tuesday & Thursday from 7:00-7:45 PM.
  • Class size – Sessions attract 8-12 women per night, showing increasing interest.

This program provides a safe and supportive training environment, allowing women to develop skills without intimidation.
