Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is an exciting and effective martial art that helps develop self-defense skills, physical fitness, and mental discipline. However, if you’re new to BJJ, you might be wondering whether to start with Gi or No-Gi training. The good news? There’s no definitive “better” style—both have their unique benefits!
At Citadel BJJ in Iowa City, we offer both Gi and No-Gi classes, giving students the opportunity to experience both styles and decide which one they enjoy more. However, we highly recommend starting with our Fundamentals program, which is taught in the Gi to help beginners build a solid foundation in BJJ.
Gi vs. No-Gi: What’s the Difference?
The biggest difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ is the attire and how techniques are applied.
- Gi BJJ involves wearing a traditional kimono-style uniform, which allows for grips on the collar, sleeves, and pants. This style focuses on technical grips, control, and methodical strategies.
- No-Gi BJJ is practiced in rash guards and shorts, and since there are no handles to grab onto, the game is typically faster-paced, relying more on wrestling techniques, movement, and body control.
If you’re unsure which style to try first, check out our blog on What’s the Difference Between Gi and No-Gi BJJ? for a deeper breakdown.
Which Style Should Beginners Start With?
While both styles are beneficial, we believe that beginners will get the most out of starting with Gi training in our Fundamentals program. Learning in the Gi teaches grip control, positional awareness, and core techniques that translate well into No-Gi training later.
To make your first class easier, we’ll provide you with a Gi for your trial class so you don’t have to worry about gear.
Fundamentals Class Schedule:
- Monday – Thursday: 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM
- Saturday: 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM

What If I Prefer No-Gi?
That’s totally fine! Some people love the strategic, grip-based style of Gi, while others enjoy the fast, wrestling-oriented pace of No-Gi. At Citadel BJJ, we offer both styles so you can try them out and see which one fits your goals.
Once you’ve built a strong foundation in the Fundamentals class, you can explore No-Gi classes to further develop your skills.
5. When Should I Arrive Before My First BJJ Class at Citadel?
We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled class. This gives you time to check in, meet the coaches, and get acquainted with the gym. One of the owners or coaches will be there to greet you, answer any last-minute questions, and guide you through the process.
You’ll also get a chance to check out our new facility, built in 2024, which is designed to be both beginner-friendly and high-performance for all levels of practitioners.
